The Canopus paper used for the main text is the result of extensive prototyping and testing, seeking a soft writing feel, compatibility with a wide range of inks, and beautiful color reproduction. It represents the best of Yamamoto Paper Industry's current capabilities. It is ideal for enjoying colored inks, with its shading and gloss sheen. Please enjoy it.
▶A Passion for New Paper In 2019, "Cosmo Air Light" received rave reviews from many writing enthusiasts at the San Francisco Pen Show. However, its brilliance came to an end in 2022 when production ceased. Since that day, we have wandered for a long time. Convinced that the paper that Nippon Paper Industries adopted as a successor could not possibly evoke that same feeling again, Yamamoto Paper Industry has been researching and exploring to create a new paper. However, the path has not been easy. The domestic paper industry, while resisting the tide of the times, is shutting down and discarding old paper machines and consolidating various types of paper in order to survive. In such a challenging environment, tackling the challenge of creating a new type of paper was an extremely difficult task. Nevertheless, believing that it was Yamamoto Paper's mission to embrace the quality produced by Japanese papermakers and the passion they pour into each sheet of paper, and to convey that to the world, we dedicated all our efforts to this project over three years.
▶Canopus 73g/m² The main text is blank so that it can be used freely without any restrictions. A 12mm ruled/6mm grid underlay is also included. When selecting the thickness of the main text, we conducted numerous usage tests. After considering various aspects such as being recognized by notebook enthusiasts worldwide, the transparency of the underlay, and the writing feel, we adopted 73.0g/m². Canopus is a paper born from Japan's world-renowned "bulky" papermaking technology. A thickness of 73g/m² is 120±3μm, which is roughly equivalent to 150.0g/m² for coated paper. In other words, compared to other papers of similar thickness, Canopus is about 50% lighter. Therefore, CANOPUS NOTE is a very light notebook considering the texture and volume of the paper.
▶Why is this paper named Canopus? Canopus is the second brightest star in the entire sky, located about 310 light-years away. It emits a strong, dazzling light and is also known in Japan as the "Star of Longevity" or "Star of the Old Man." It is said to be the origin of Fukurokuju and Jurojin, two of the Seven Lucky Gods. It is also said that this star is not visible during wars and turmoil, and that it "becomes visible when the world is at peace," and that people prayed for happiness and longevity when they saw it. The northernmost point from which Canopus can be seen is 37.9 degrees north latitude, making it a very difficult star to find in the Northern Hemisphere, including Japan. Many people travel to the Southern Hemisphere to see its beautiful form. We named this beautiful paper "Canopus" because of the difficult process we went through, involving repeated research and exploration, and because we hope for peaceful times that can be created through "writing and drawing."
▶Binding [Thread Stitching] Opening and closing it many times every day. Opening it flat to 180 degrees to the spine, or folding it 360 degrees. Notebooks require binding that can withstand harsh environments. CANOPUS NOTE is bound using a method called "thread stitching." Stitching thread is passed through 12 places approximately every 15 mm on every page, so the pages will not come loose even after a long time. Hardcover books and diaries also use thread stitching binding. □Binding [Spine Leveling] After the thread stitching process, pressure is applied evenly to the spine to suppress the paper's rebound and bulging. By performing this "spine leveling" multiple times, the CANOPUS NOTE is created with a beautiful form and firm corners.
▶Binding [Rounded Corners] Furthermore, the top and bottom edges of the notebook are rounded. This prevents the corners of the notebook from bending. It may seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference over time with prolonged use.
